While it mostly depends on what time of year and season, some good colors to stick with are:

  1. Blue - which contrasts (opposite of the color wheel) with all of the red and orange rock.

  2. White - Since pure white isn’t found a lot in nature, it’s another color that adds contrast and makes images feel more bright.

  3. Black - Another contrasting color that makes images feel more dark and moody.

You’ll see a lot of photos taken from above Fruita & Grand Junction, overlooking the valley. An often overlooked location is the canyons at the bottom of the monument, usually easily accessible by car.

Sunset will always be one of the best times of day to get your engagement photos at the monument! The sun begins to set and lights all of the surrounding red rock on fire before settling behind the monument and casting the perfect even glow over everything. If you stay long enough you’ll also witness the lights in the valley begin to come on - one of my favorite things to witness out here.

The joys of hiring a local photographer is they get to take you to cool unknown spots that have only been found by spending way too much time in the area. Luckily, Colorado National Monument has a ton of those sites that are either an easy walk, or short hike.

Independence Monument is one of the more well known towers in the monument and a popular spot for photos. While privacy isn’t as easy here, there are some alternate angles you can see Independence Monument with a bit more privacy.

If you’ve got to cross a road then why not make it a fun Beatles moment! Just make sure the road is clear of cars and that you aren’t by any curves or bends where cars could come speeding past. Safety first! :)
