How to Elope in Buena Vista, Colorado

How to Get Married in
Buena Vista, Colorado

Buena Vista is a hidden gem for couples who want those stunning Colorado landscapes without the crowds. With the Sawatch Range as your backdrop, you can say your vows in a wildflower-filled meadow, along the rushing Arkansas River, or with a high-alpine lake behind you. Whether you’re doing an easy hike, soaking in nearby hot springs, or taking a scenic drive up Cottonwood Pass, BV is a dream for couples who want some adventure with a very laid-back feel.

If towering peaks, river views, and small town vibes sound like your dream location - let me introduce you to Buena Vista (or as the locals call it, BV).

Great for couples who:

  • Want a mix of rugged mountain beauty and that chill small-town energy.

  • Love the idea of a riverside ceremony or a high-elevation adventure.

  • Are excited about post-ceremony hot springs or camping under the stars.

Frequently Asked Questions About Buena Vista

  • Weather in BV is like … all weather in Colorado. Pack for every season. The change in elevation between town & mountain passes like Cottonwood make for some veryyyy different temperatures.

Spring (April - mid June): The valley starts to warm up, lower trails start to melt out, but you’ll still encounter snow up high. Spring is truly a you-never-know-what-youre-gonna-get situation.

Summer (mid June - mid September): Prime time baby! Warm sunny days in the 70’s to 90’s depending on the day and altitude. Late rainstorms are popular and you want to be off of the mountains by 2 pm to avoid storms and lightning.

Fall (mid September - October): Back to cooler temps but crisp and cozy and somehow still warm enough to hang out outside without loosing all the feeling in your fingers.

Winter (November - March): Colder temps (obviously) but don’t let that fool you! Winter is actually an incredible time of year to elope in Colorado IF you can be flexible with your date and your vendors (I am!). Sometimes you get a blizzard that shuts the freeway down. Sometimes you get a 40 degree day but at such a high altitude, you can wear a t-shirt and feel warm.

  • There’s really no wrong time to elope in BV, but each season brings its own adventure.

Spring (April–June): Things are just starting to wake up again — the river’s flowing fast, wildflowers are popping up, and the weather can feel like a little bit of everything. One day it’s 70 and sunny, the next it’s snowing on your picnic. Kinda chaotic, kinda charming. Great for couples who are chill with surprise weather and want those lush, fresh mountain vibes.

Summer (July–August): Long days, warm air, and that classic Colorado combo of sunshine followed by thunderstorm. Mornings are usually perfect for hiking, portraits, or vow exchanges — just be ready to duck for cover after 2pm if the skies decide to pop off. This is also when the wildflowers and alpine lakes are peak wow.

Fall (September–October): Aspens turning gold, crisp air, and quiet trails. If “cozy flannel and hot cider after your vows” sounds like a vibe, this is your time. I’ve had October days that felt like late summer and others where we got snowed on mid-ceremony. (Totally worth it.)

Winter (November–March): Moody skies, snow-dusted peaks, and a real chance at having the whole place to yourselves. If you’re into snowshoes, fuzzy boots, and cozying up post-ceremony with a drink by the fire — hiiiii, winter is calling. Just be ready to roll with the weather and leave room for road closures or alternate plans.

  • Flying: If you're coming from out of state, flying into Denver International Airport (DEN) is your best bet. From there, it's about a 2 ½ hour (very scenic!!) drive west on Interstate 70 and then south on Highway 285. Trust me, the views along the way are worth it!

Driving: Most place you fly into you’ll still need to drive a bit to BV so definitely be up for a road trip! The area into BV, whether you’re coming from the north, south, east, or west, it super scenic and beautiful.

  • Buena Vista is definitely a place where you can treat yourself without feeling like you’re gonna go broke.

Lodging: Whether you’re dreaming of a cute lil AirBNB, a riverside lodge, or a campsite - BV has all the options.

Food: Tasty breakfast burritos for under $10, food trucks galore, but also some sit down places with Colorado-inspired menus and cocktails. Personally, hitting up House Rock Kitchen for lunch after a morning hike is a tradition for me at this point. No matter where you choose though, BV is superrrrr laid back.

Activities: My personal favorite part of Buena Vista - the adventures. Hiking = free. Stargazing = free. River chillin’ = free. Besides the endless free options, there’s also hot springs, river rafting, paddle boarding rentals…tons of options without blowing a budget.

  • Short answer: It depends.

If you're getting married on private land or a designated venue - no permit needed!

But if you’re thinking of saying your vows on national forest land, a designated wilderness area, or BLM land, you might need a special use permit depending on your group size, location, and if you're bringing any props (like arches, chairs, etc.).

Best bet? Ask your photographer (hi 👋) or call the Forest Service office in Salida for confirmation.

  • Nope! Colorado is one of the only states where you can self-solemnize, which means you can legally marry yourselves . No officiant, no witness required. Just you two and a pen. And if you want, your pup who can sign your marriage license with their paw print.

    • Wildflower meadows are delicate—stay on trails to protect them!

    • Avoid confetti, rice, or anything that could disrupt the environment.

    • Pack out everything you bring in, including decorations and trash.

  • Heck yes. Most trails, restaurants with patios, and even some hotels are dog friendly. This is a town where people take their dogs everywhere so dogs can have a good time third wheeling in BV.

How to obtain a marriage license in Chaffee County

If you want to - legally - get married in BV, you’ll obviously need a marriage license. Thankfully Colorado makes it pretty easy.

Some counties allow you to start the process online (which I highly recommend), and then make an appointment with the County Clerk and Recorder office to finish and pick up the license. Both of you need to be there with $30 (cash!!!), and your ID’s.

Like every other County Clerk and Recorder office - hours are typically 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through THURSDAY! Keep in mind that this isn’t a last minute weekend errand situation!

For more information check out the Chaffee County Clerk and Recorderer office. Sometimes things change and unfortunately I’m not always 100% up to date on the going-ons of the county offices. ;)

How to Pick the Best Spot for Your Elopement

How to Pick the Best Spot for Your Elopement

  • Drive Up Spots: Dramatic mountaintop vibes without hiking for miles in formalwear. However, privacy cannnnn be a trade off depending on the location, season, and time of day.

  • 4X4 + Short Walks: If you’re down to rent a Jeep and take a drive, there are tons of gorgeous tucked away overlooks, quiet alpine lakes, riverside nooks that you can reach with a 5 to 30 minute walk. The trade off is the hour long drive up the bumpy 4 wheel drive roads.

  • Not Sure?: If you're torn between full adventure and easy access, don't stress! We can totally build a day around both! You can say your vows at a drive up spot (even with your loved ones!), and then sneak off together for a short hike or quiet picnic somewhere just for you two.

Where to Get Married

in Buena Vista

lost lake Buena Vista cottonwood pass

Lost Lake

Best for couples who want to hike to a lil tucked-away alpine escape.

If you’re dreaming of a quiet, intimate elopement spot, Lost Lake is it. Lost Lake isn’t as much of a hidden gem anymore, but like most places in Colorado, you can likely have the place to yourself for sunrise or sunset. This spot is perfect if you want an off-the-grid feel without a super strenuous hike (about a 45 minute hike out and back).

Best for couples who:

  • Want a secluded, peaceful elopement location.

  • Love the idea of an alpine lake backdrop.

  • Are up for a little adventure to reach a truly hidden gem.

Best for couples who want jaw-dropping mountain views without a hike.

Cottonwood Pass

Best for couples who want jaw dropping mountain views without a hike.

Cottonwood Pass is a dream if you want those dramatic high alpine views without having to trek miles to get them. With easy drive-up access, this spot offers panoramic views of the Collegiate Peaks and surrounding valleys, making it perfect for a scenic elopement. Sunrise and sunset here are unreal, with golden light spilling over the mountains! And there are plenty of pull offs for private moments and epic portraits.

Best for couples who:

  • Want sweeping mountain views without a long hike.

  • Love the idea of an easily accessible but breathtaking ceremony spot.

  • Are up for chasing golden hour light at one of Colorado’s most scenic passes.

Fourmile Canyon Recreation Area in Buena Vista

Fourmile Canyon Area

Best for couples who want wide open space and all the options.

Fourmile is like a build-your-own elopement playground. There's everything from rugged dirt roads and pine groves to rocky overlooks and quiet valley meadows. Want a short hike? You got it. Want to pull off and say vows next to your car? Also doable. It’s raw, rugged, and beautifully unpolished. You’ll feel like you have the whole place to yourselves. Because most days, you probably will.

Great for couples who:

  • Are up for a little dirt-road adventure (4WD recommended!)

  • Like the idea of picking a spot based on the vibe that day

  • Aren’t afraid of a little dust (embrace the desert grit!)

Arkansas River Wedding

Arkansas River (via riverside pull-offs or private access)

Best for river rats who love the sound of water and some river magic.

There are a handful of scenic riverside spots along the Arkansas that are just chef’s kiss for a ceremony. If you’ve got private access (via Hipcamp, a boat pull-off, or companies like River Runners riverside weddings), you can say your vows to the soundtrack of rushing water. Keep in mind that if you have guests, it can be harder for them to hear you read your vows from further away. Obvious bonus: you get to float before and after.

Great for couples who:

  • Are kayakers, rafters, or just river people at heart

  • Want a ceremony that feels intimate and grounded

  • Might be soaking in a hot spring later and want to stay close by

Chalk Creek

Chalk Creek + Other 4x4 Roads

Best for couples who want to go way off the beaten path and earn that epic view.

The Chalk Creek canyon area and all the side roads shooting off of it are seriously so underrated. Pine forests, rocky cliff walls, rushing creeks, and zero people in sight if you time it right. Some spots are mellow enough to reach in a Subaru, and others… not so much (hi, tire-scraping shelf roads). But if you’re down for a little mud, a little bounce, and a lot of privacy, this is one of my favorite “let’s just pull over here and make it official” areas.

Great for couples who:

  • Are comfortable getting dusty and maybe just a little lost

  • Don’t mind a little windblown hair and trail-dirt on their shoes

  • Want something that feels raw, real, and like it’s all theirs

Taylor Park Reservoir in Colorado

Taylor Park Reservoir

Best for couples dreaming of a wide open lakeside elopement with faraway peaks on all sides.

Taylor Park is one of those places that feels like it should be famous but isn’t (which is perfect for you, honestly). Nestled between the mountains and loaded with quiet little coves and shoreline spots, it’s ideal for couples who want the privacy of a lake elopement without sacrificing mountain views. Whether you’re paddleboarding after your vows or just soaking it all in with bare feet in the water, it’s peaceful, pretty, and super underrated.

Great for couples who:

  • Want a lakefront ceremony that’s not crowded or commercial

  • Are into kayaking, fishing, or just skipping rocks post-“I do”

  • Don’t mind driving a bit further out for a stunning, quiet location

San Isabelle National Forest

San Isabelle Forest Pull-Offs

Best for couples who love a good overlook and no crowds.

There are SO many overlooked spots along the backroads in the San Isabel that have mind blowing views of the Collegiate Peaks y’all. Thick pine forests, open meadows, and places you can pull off and have a totally private ceremony with stunning views to the west.

Great for couples who:

  • Want simplicity and flexibility with some bumpy dirt roads

  • Don’t need to “name” the spot for it to be special

  • Are eloping on a weekday and want privacy

Unique Lodging & Airbnbs Around Buena Vista

Best for couples who want their stay to feel just as special as the ceremony.

Rustic luxury meets private hot springs. Oh yeah - these cabins are tucked away with gorgeous views and their own soaking pools. Ideal for a cozy night in post-ceremony or a champagne-in-the-hot-spring celebration.

  • Outside Design Nature Hotel (Just south of BV)

This place is low-key stunning — minimalist, modern cabins nestled in nature with big windows and even bigger views. It’s quiet, comfy, and feels like a high-end retreat without the fuss.

  • Surf Hotel & Chateau

If you're into boutique hotel vibes, crisp sheets, on-site dining, and walkability to everything in town — Surf Hotel is it. Bonus: they have wedding packages if you're going that route, but also great for a pre- or post-elopement stay.

  • Moonstream Vintage Campground

Want something different? This spot is full of vintage Airstreams and glamping setups with major retro charm. It’s fun, funky, and gives you that outdoor feel with way more personality than a tent.

  • Hipcamps & Private Airbnbs

Some of the most beautiful elopements I’ve photographed have been right on someone’s property — a cabin in the valley, a yurt with views, or a deck with nothing but peaks in the distance. Because so many homes in the Arkansas River Valley face the Collegiate Peaks, you’ll get insane mountain views even from a quiet backyard.
