Lake Dillon Winter Engagements

A winter engagement session with Amy and Blake at Lake Dillon.

Well, it’s been a crazy couple of weeks out there now hasn’t it?

Before all of this started, I found myself in Summit County photographing the love between a newly engaged couple. A and B, who just happened to meet in line for the ski lift (uhm, cutest meet-cute ever).

It just so happened that the day we met up on Swan Mountain for their engagement photos, Summit county had its first presumptive positive case of Covid-19. And I’ve been self-quarantined in my house ever since.

So back when things were still normal, we met at Snake River Inlet. The lake was still frozen with pockets of ice fishing holes littered across the lake, before we made our way up to Sapphire Point Overlook. For a mild winter in early March, the trail was still snow (and ice) packed, making the whole journey an adventure in good footing.

We drank some beers, New Belgiums’ Citradelic, one of their (and now my) favorites. We talked about the mountains and the ski resorts and how they met while the sun dropped along with the temperature.

Truthfully, I am so thankful for this last shoot to reminisce on while we all get through this thing together. To check out more photos from this amazing location, check out this blog post of an elopement at Sapphire Point Overlook from last fall.

Sapphire Point Overlook Wedding | The Sarnes

The Sarnes elopement at Sapphire Point in Breckenridge

Mercy reached out to me last year about photographing her and Gages’ elopement out in Colorado and I was so ecstatic, it seemed like August would never get here. Mercy and I know each other from college age times back in Ohio and it was so wonderful showing a familiar face one of my favorite trails in Breckenridge.

Mercy and Gage met when they both worked for Apple, and the rest is history. Surrounded by family and the mountains, they said their vows at Sapphire Point in Breckenridge, we took some family photos, and then walked around the trail together to capture them amongst some magical mountains.

Sapphire Point is in-between Silverthorn and Breckenridge. You travel a two lane windy road that pulls into a small parking lot to the trailhead, and then there is about a mile long loop around Sapphire Point that you can walk. This spot in Breckenridge is so great for elopements and weddings because although it is always public, you can reserve the little overlook park for a wedding. Mercy and Gage got married on Monday, August 12th at 8am and it was the perfect time to have such a busy trail to themselves and their family. Sapphire Point Overlook itself sits high above Dillon Reservoir, the town of Frisco, and Breckenridge. To the south you can see the Ten Mile Range, as well as Breckenridge Ski Resort.

If you’re looking for a wonderful spot near Breckenridge, Frisco, or Silverthorn, I recommend Sapphire Point Overlook for your next wedding or elopement.
