A Winter Elopement in Colorado: A Dreamy Adventure Through Snow & Stunning Views
An Unforgettable Winter Elopement in Colorado
Eloping in the mountains in February means embracing the unknown. On this particular day, we experienced everything Colorado winters are famous for—clear blue skies, sunshine, and a full-blown snowstorm all within a few hours. But that’s exactly what made this elopement so magical.
Our day started with a gondola ride up the BreckConnect, the free scenic lift that whisks you from downtown Breckenridge up to the base of the ski resort. With fresh snow coating the trees, it was the perfect winter wonderland backdrop for photos. At the top, these two cozied up with steaming cups of hot cocoa, watching skiers and snowboarders glide down the mountain. Their sweet pup even got in on the fun, happily licking whipped cream—a little moment that made the day even more special.
After taking in the mountain views, we rode the gondola back down and drove over to Sapphire Point, one of the most picturesque overlooks in Summit County. The panoramic views of Dillon Reservoir were a little hidden by low clouds but the towering pines covered in snow made for the dreamiest backdrop. Then, as we made our way toward Loveland Pass, the weather took a turn, as it so often does in the Rockies.
Blizzard conditions set in, transforming our scenic drive into an adrenaline-fueled winter adventure. Snow swirled around us, visibility dropped, and the winding mountain roads became a reminder of just how unpredictable Colorado winters can be. But these two? They embraced it all. Wrapped in each other’s arms, surrounded by the swirling snow, they shared a moment of pure magic in the middle of the storm.
Why Flexibility is Key for a Winter Elopement in Colorado
If you’re dreaming of a winter elopement in Colorado, being flexible is absolutely essential. The weather here can shift in an instant—one moment you’re basking in the sun in 40-degree weather, and the next, you’re bundled up in full winter gear battling icy winds that make it feel like it’s below freezing.
Colorado’s winter weather is unpredictable, and mountain roads can be treacherous. Blizzards happen, roads close, and conditions can change rapidly, especially at higher elevations like Loveland Pass or Rocky Mountain National Park. Because of this, I always keep buffer days open on either side of my winter elopements. Your safety is my top priority—if we need to adjust plans due to a storm, I want to make sure we have options.
What does this mean for you?
Be open to adjusting your timeline—earlier or later in the day, or even a different date.
Have a backup location in case weather makes your original spot inaccessible.
Be prepared for everything from sunny, warm afternoons to full-on whiteouts.
And let’s be honest—embracing the unexpected often leads to the most epic, once-in-a-lifetime moments.
What to Expect During the Winter Months in Colorado
Wondering what winter in Colorado really looks like? Here’s a month-by-month breakdown of what to expect:
October
First snowfall typically arrives, but it's hit or miss.
Fall colors and snow can overlap early in the month—hello, dreamy golden aspens with a dusting of white!
November & December
The season starts mild, with early snowstorms.
Lower elevations may still be dry, while mountains start building their snowpack.
January
Temps drop, and true winter begins.
Powder days are frequent, making it a prime time for snow-covered elopements.
February & March
The heart of winter. Cold, snowy, and absolutely stunning.
March is typically the snowiest month of the year!
April
Don’t let spring at lower elevations around Denver fool you—this is still a heavy snow month!
Some of the best mountain snowstorms happen in April.
May (Yep, still winter)
One last “rager” snowstorm usually hits before things calm down.
By Memorial Day, the mountains start transitioning into spring.
Colorado’s winter is a wild ride, but that’s what makes it so special.
Winter Elopement Must-Knows: Practical Tips for Your Big Day
Colorado’s winter weather is stunning but extreme, and a little preparation goes a long way in making sure you stay warm and comfortable. Here are a few must-know tips for an unforgettable (and cozy) winter elopement:
✅ Layers, layers, layers! – A warm wedding dress or suit is great, but thermal base layers are a game-changer. Opt for merino wool or fleece leggings and long sleeves under your attire. Bonus: They’re invisible in photos!
✅ Waterproof boots are a lifesaver – Snow can soak through dress shoes fast, and no one wants frozen toes. A pair of stylish winter boots will keep your feet warm and blend seamlessly into mountain elopement photos.
✅ Hand warmers & foot warmers are magic – Slip a few in your gloves and boots for extra warmth. They’re small, discreet, and worth it.
✅ The sun is powerful—even in winter – Snow reflects sunlight like crazy, so don’t forget sunscreen and lip balm with SPF to protect your skin.
✅ Stay hydrated! – The dry mountain air and high elevation can dehydrate you faster than you realize. Keep a water bottle handy (and maybe a thermos of hot cocoa for bonus warmth).
✅ Have a warm-up plan – Whether it’s stepping into the car for a quick heat blast or wrapping up in a cozy blanket between shots, having small breaks helps you last longer outside.
