Colorado Wildflower Photoshoot on the Grand Mesa

I’m not sure I needed another reason to love the west slope of Colorado anymore. I mean, we already have way less traffic than the front range and Denver, you can actually find camping spots out here, we have such amazing access to mountains and the desert, and don’t even get me started on how we don’t have to take i70 to get to anywhere of note (rock slide closures anyone?).

But now I get to add another to the endless list. Wildflowers. I’m always learning and finding it fascinating that wildflowers in Colorado don’t all bloom at the same time. In fact, different varieties bloom at different times in the spring and summer, which is why you can find wildflowers for weeks up in the mountains.

So when these two reached out and asked about wildflowers, of course I had the perfect spot in mind. Just an hour drive from Grand Junction, and always significantly cooler, the Grand Mesa is my favorite place to shoot when it’s 90+ degrees from June to August down in the valley.

It has everything. Islands, lakes, pine trees, aspens, mountains, hills, scree fields, water sports, hiking, camping, lodges, views, fields, and you guessed it. Wildflowers.

These two traveled all the way out from California, and I had the best time roaming around the hills with them showing them this hidden gem of Colorado. My favorite part of our time together had to be the photos with mom who also happens to live in the area, whom they were visiting. I am such a fan of bringing family to your sessions, even if it’s for a few quick photos together. How friggen cute do this mother and daughter duo look running through a wildflower field, like come on!!!!

Kimberly Crist

Hi, I'm Kimberly 👋

Colorado elopement photographer, snack enthusiast, and your personal hype woman for ditching the traditional wedding entirely.

I spend most of my time wandering dirt roads around Crested Butte, the San Juans, and Denver finding the kind of spots that make you forget what stress even feels like. You know — the ones with the views that hit different at sunrise, where the wildflowers are doing too much, and the only witnesses are a couple of marmots and your dog in a tiny bandana.

If you're dreaming of vows somewhere wildly beautiful with zero seating charts involved, hi. That's literally what I do. You bring the love story. I'll bring the camera, the location ideas, and enough snacks to get us through golden hour.
